The Silken Wood is an atmospheric / cinematic score depicting stories stemming from childhood fears of deep forests woven in a sea of spider webs. Part of the inspiration came after receiving Peter Brown's beautiful woodland photos from Haddo House of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. After desaturating the cover image thoughts of silk came to mind. As a child I was haunted by the giant spider scenes from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. The combination of cold synth loops run through gritty grain laced with swirling delay effects help paint such images in my mind.

Using a Waldorf Blofeld as the main synth source I ran the signal path through a Rowin Twin looper pedal, the TC Electronics Brainwaves pitch shifter with a harsh filter setting and finally Strymon’s DIG delay. As most of my productions consist of a hybrid of physical gear and post DAW production I thought this time I would also include some of the raw recording sessions as part of the album. These “Silken Session” tracks are in no particular order and also include several recordings that didn’t even make it to the album itself. These tracks have no post production effects, percussion or mastering yet still possess a charm and atmosphere of their own.

I believe the last time I dabbled in fear based inspiration was the release titled Things We Fear back in 2016, which even had one track “Arachno” that addressed the fear at hand. I suppose from darkness and discomfort creativity flourishes.
