Sonic Reflections

Tom Rimshot A mirrored image of branches and a grey sky is an appropriate analogy for what's being explored here. Downscope pings the depths of the waters, and replays what comes back from the inverted skies through his laboratory of generators, processors and timekeepers. Slowly, the measured recordings cross the reflected distances and manifest on his equipment as the glacially paced ambient dub-outs presented here. Never has the destination been less important than the process of getting there.

about

What began as one lengthy track, Sonic Reflections slowly morphed into other interpretations as each successive composition became a bent, smeared reflection of the other. Inspiration was drawn from a photo taken by my cousin from his hike along the Hemlock Hills in Ridgefield, Connecticut. I fixated on the murky liquid that reflects the canopy of bare branches and cloudy sky above. The serene beauty began to change though when I recognized the darkness underneath the water surface, only partially seen via the dark reflected trees that cut slits in the white washed reflected sky. The setting provides a rich duality of peace and fear, much like many natural environments. The tracks contain layers of echoing elements like ripples disrupting the still water, breathing life into the deadly stillness.

“The question is not what you look at, but what you see.”
― Henry David Thoreau

In preparation for the physical format release along with my aversion towards empty disc space I created what I call extractions from each piece. These are stripped down elements that breathe a life of their own, softly treated with minimal effect processing and some alterations.
